Top 5 Missed Mandatory Standards

The most often missed mandatory standard was HR 4A - Staff Screening. Twenty-five (25) camps missed this standard and needed to complete the Immediate Corrective Action (ICA) process. The mandatory portion of this standard requires camps to check all staff – paid, volunteer, and contracted against the National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and to have a signed Voluntary Disclosure statement from these same staff.  This was most often missed because camp staff did not understand that checking their local or state sex offender public registries did not suffice to meet this standard. Sometimes this was missed because a camp did not have voluntary disclosure statements from the staff.

Coming in second was PA-21 - Watercraft Rescue Skills. This continues to be a common missed mandatory.  Staff at nineteen camps either neglected to document the skills verification or totally skipped this standard because they thought the lifeguard certifications converted to demonstrated skills and proficiency.

Sixteen camps missed HW-2 - Health Histories. Typically a staff person at the camp overlooked a component required on the form.  Occasionally, an overzealous visitor acted more like an auditor resulting in non-compliance.

Much like PA-21 above, PA-15 - Swim Lifeguard Skills is in the top five missed mandatory standards category.  Thirteen camps missed this standard.

Six camps missed PC-15 - Protective Headgear. With some confusion due to late released interpretations six camps didn’t realize the applicability to their adventure challenge program.
